Adding a Door to my Patio Enclosure (+ more details... )
Optional built in door panels. We offer 2 & 3 panel curtains, where panels can serve as a door opening. Door panel rolled up.

Opened Patios often need a way to enter/exit the space. This is primarily done by splitting an opening into two smaller curtains that zip together and fasten securely to the floor in the middle. This allows each panel to be rolled up independently. For example and 10' opening could be split into 7' panel, and smaller 3' panel to serve as a door. In the photo above, a larger opening is split into 3 panels that roll up independently, with the center panel serving as a door. We can also offer guidance on adding temporary (seasonal) or permanent posts to your spaces framework, so a traditional storm door can be added as needed to your outdoor space. This is common solution for opened patio enclosures that receive a lot of foot traffic.

Can I use an outdoor heater with my PES?
"Changed the way we use our outdoor space."Attractive fabric & colors.Restaurant Patio Enclosure

Yes, outdoor heaters and fireplaces are used by many of our clients to warm up their enclosed spaces in the winter. We also recommend putting your ceiling fan in reverse if possible to help circulate the air.  You may also wish to request a system using our marine grade zippers versus our standard fasteners for a more airtight fit.

What is the maximum wind rating?

Our manufacturing process and the materials we use in each PES meet or exceed the standards commonly found in sailmaking, offshore boat enclosures, and large free standing shade sails - our knowledge comes directly from decades in the sailmaking, marine and shade sail industry. PES is rigorously tested at wind speeds up to 70 MPH, yet since each of our panels is customized to your unique space there is not certified wind rating. Our team will work with you to determine the best design to meet your space's and climate's specific needs.  To learn more, check out how our curtains are used in extreme climates for wind protectionLab Test Results of our Clear Vinyl Sheet Glass Tested for extreme cold, pressure, abrasion & UV.

What is the maximum height & width?
The same restaurant after installation.

This center opening is enclosed with 3 panels, with a door panel in the middle. Simply roll up the door panel  and the side panels remain securely attached to the floor. There is no minimum or maximum on heights and widths. We can build any size you would like, however, once curtains get wider than 10-12 feet they can become difficult to roll up or even secure in windy conditions.  It may require assistance to properly roll-up and secure oversized curtains. We often suggest splitting your larger opening into two smaller curtains that zip together and fasten to the floor in the middle.  This adds rigidity to your system and allows you to rollup each curtain independently. We can also offer guidance on adding temporary or permanent posts to your spaces framework.

How does PES stand up to cold?

PES is very popular in the Great Lakes, the Rocky Mountains and the Northeast regions where extreme cold and heavy wind are often a concern. Our curtains are built to withstand extreme cold and wind. Even our clear vinyl has been laboratory tested for Low Temperature Flexibility @ -30 F with no cracking, and Dimensional Stability (shrinkage & expansion due to temperature change) of less than 0.5% (1/2%).  Most products see significant cracking at these temperatures and shrinkage and expansion of 5-7% is common. These changes can significantly alter the look of your enclosure, the ability to fasten it in cold weather, and your enclosures longevity.  While our enclosures are made to withstand extreme cold, we still recommend keeping your enclosure down when temperatures are below 55 degrees Fahrenheit and only rolling up the fabric portion of your enclosure if you still like the airflow. This will assure you can use your enclosure with minimal effort and provide many years of use for your PES enclosure.  All of our components have been tested in extreme cold and our manufacturing process comes directly from many years of experience in the sailmaking industry.  Lab Test Results of our Clear Vinyl Sheet Glass Tested for extreme cold, pressure, abrasion & UV.

How air & water tight is your standard enclosure?
2023 Weather Resistant Enclosure Panels - freshly installed.

Our standard curtains fit snugly along the top, sides and base of your porch or patio. The top of our roll-up curtains slide into a top tracks creating a wind and waterproof seal. The sides of our curtains attach to your porch using commercial-grade waterproof zippers and weather flaps to keep out all the elements. The base of our curtains utilizes a weighted roll-bar adding both rigidity and calm to your overall system.  To learn more, check out: Wind-Block Enclosures PES Weather Curtains

How do I deal with wide openings without center supports?

This center opening is enclosed with 3 panels, with a door panel in the middle. Simply roll up the door panel and the side panels remain securely attached to the floor.

Rather than enclosing an extra wide opening with a single roll-up panel,  we often split the opening with two curtains that zip together. Below the zipper, is a floor mount (pictured below) can be used to add rigidity to your system and allow the panels to zip up independently.  For example, if you have a 140” wide opening, we can split that into two  70” curtains that will zip together in the middle and attach to the floor securely to the floor with a quarter turn fastener. Other options include adding a seasonal post, so rather than using a zipper, the curtains attach along the vertical post for a nice secure fit.

There are no minimum or maximum on heights and widths for your PES panels. We can build any size you would like, however, once curtains get wider than 10-12 feet they can become difficult to roll up or even secure in windy conditions. They may require assistance to properly roll-up and secure. If you plan to roll your curtains up and down more frequently we do suggest splitting your larger opening into two smaller curtains that zip together.

Panel attaches to the floor mount via an adjustable attachment point. Simply pull the strap to snug your curtain to the floor.

  3. Matt Simington

    Hi Ryan,

We appreciate your interest in PES and taking the time to upload your information. I reviewed and updated your account to include our track and zipper mounting system. This provides a top-to-bottom side seal, ease of installation and use. All curtains will be able to zip and unzip from side tracks when rolling them up or down. To help you visualize, I uploaded some images that can be found under “Resources For Your Project” within your account (link below).

Next steps? I’m here to answer any questions. However, if you prefer to move forward, you can make a deposit within your account (refundable anytime prior to your sign-off on production) and be prompted to schedule a design consultation. During this call, Cory from our fabrication team will guide you through the final steps in the design process and measurements needed for production. *Please be near your porch with a pencil and measuring tape handy.

Please reach out to me at 410-775-5555 or reply to this email at anytime.

Matt. Couple of question. 1. Can we do a three panel instead of 2 for the big opening?
    2.  Would you recommend splitting the two end panels into 2 smaller ones?  The more I think about it the more it seems better to have the north and south be two smaller panels and the big main opening be a 3 panel.
    3. If the main is just 2 panel, you could roll up either side independently? Correct?
    4. Also, how much of the panel can be the clear vinyl?
Thanks for time on this.  I do want to do this project asap and get it done.
I also have a call scheduled for Monday afternoon.  If it’s easiest for me to ask all these questions then, that’s fine too. ThanksRyan

  5. Matt Simington

    Ryan,

Tell me more about your thoughts and why it makes more sense to do additional panels. I would like to get a better understanding on how you intend to use the system. This is how we would typically design a system and the most cost effective option. The more curtains you have the more expensive it will become. You will also need a floor anchor at ever center zipper joiner. I try to reduce the amount of floor mounts needed.

    All panels will roll independently.

52 to 53in is the max clear window available, the fabric is a critical part of structural strength to the curtain and helps support the large viewing window.

Your account is ready to move forward at anytime to the next step of your design consult call. Once we have verified measurements, these can go into production. Production time is around 2 weeks.

  6. Ryan Johnson

Matt Thanks for that.  Plan is to be able to use this area more during 3 seasons spring through fall.   Putting in ceiling fan TV n outdoor couch.  The grills and table you currently see in there would be for outside of this area.
In winter I’d plan to have them remain down to keep out snow and moderate temp in the area but it won’t see a lot of winter use.
So, fall and spring it might be more likely to either be partially open or fully closed.

  7. Matt Simington

    Ryan,

It looks like a great space and this is exactly how I use my porch. I also really like to keep my system down during the heavy spring pollen, this helps keep the space pollen free. Have 1 side panel with 2 curtains joined with a center zipper could be beneficial for easy access in and out. You could also leave one of those small openings rolled up and the rest down. We do not recommend rolling the window panels during colder temperatures because potential damage could happen. Based off the information provided how many panels would you like? Let me know and I will update account as needed so you are ready to proceed forward with a purchase.

  8. Ryan Johnson

Matt. I will go with 2 panels on north side 2 panels main (I’m still undecided if to do 3 panels here as it’s an almost 19ft wide opening, just feeling a three panel would give me better ease of in and out access, but let’s leave it at 2 for the moment)And1 panel south side.
I will talk through my couple of other questions on my call Monday.   I just need a better idea of how the fastening goes on top/sides/and floor area.  Do you all have video on that online? Or specific instructions showing how that’s mounted?

  9. Matt Simington

    Ryan,

Panels around 115 to 120in are very manageable, we regularly build curtains up to 150in of width. Splitting that opening into 3 would complicate things especially the string and pully roll up system. There would be no center post to attach the tie off cleat to for the center curtain. This would make it so you would need a cleat on the header beam or pull them all the way over to the side with extra long strings. All attachments and installation are super simple.

Please view our color card and installation links below. I think you will find these very helpful. Also go into your account to the resources for your project section. You can find this below the images of your space within your account.

Matt. I realized in the proper measuring, that I may need to remeasure widths as I went a little big.  I’m going to have to remeasure for more accurate sizes. I was measuring from outside edge of posts doing outside mount.  So I do need to readjust. But I don’t think it’s change much but 5” off north and south sides and 10” off main.
    Sent from my iPhone

  11. Ryan Johnson

Matt. Great. Thanks.  I’ll stick w 2 panels for the main and north(so I have easy access, and just one panel on south side.  The north side split into 2 would be for easy grill access in winter so don’t have to try to roll up as you mentioned.  If you think it’s still easy to access out side with a single panel, I’m okay with that.
    Sent from my iPhone

  12. Matt Simington

    Ryan,

No need to remeasure, these are just rough measurements for an estimate. All final measurements are taken during a detailed design consult call with our head designer. He will update your account after that call.

  13. Matt Simington

    Ryan,

I just wanted to follow up and see if you had additional questions after reviewing your estimate. I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

    1. Ryan Johnson

      Thanks Matt,
Just looked through everything. All looks good. Just getting some final looks but should be ready to proceed in next day or two at most.

  17. Cory Mansaray

Hey Ryan I have updated the account and it is ready for approval. For the widths, I do add a little for zipper allowance so you will notice each opening width we measured I have added a half inch. This is standard on all track and zipper systems.

Notes for curtains zipping together can be seen in the curtain details.

  18. Cory Mansaray

Thanks for completing your Design Consult with our Fabrication Team. The final step before your PES can be sent to production is to VERIFY MEASUREMENTS. Use the link below to return to My Account and double-check your measurements.

Many customers like to Print Measurements to make this process easy. Prior to hitting the Verify Measurements button, please double check that the measurements on the printed form are what you want to order.

When you’re sure everything checks out, hit the Verify Measurements to finalize measurements and send your enclosure to production. The PES team will use these measurements as a work order to create your enclosure. Many customers like to keep the printed, finalized form so they can double-check panel sizes on receipt of their finished PES.

  19. Ryan Johnson

I verify these are final measurements have been double checked and are ready for manufacturing. Any further edits would incur additional costs.

    Hi.
I’m trying to make sure I put up my side tracks properly. 2 questions.
    1. Should the top of the track, since it’s an outside mount, stick about a quarter inch above the opening?
    2. Should the top of the zipper be flus with the top of the track when installed or should it hang about an inch or so above the track?
    Thanks
    Ryan

    Hi.
Can you assist me with how to hang curtains where they are split in the middle. All of your videos deal with single curtains that anchor in both sides. But what about a long curtain that zippers in the middle. How do you determine if the middle is properly placed???

    Ryan,

Thank you for calling about your need for a replacement strap that is needed for the floor anchors. Please attach any pictures that you can share.

Additionally we discussed adding a roll down curtain that will block out the sun that comes through one of your curtains.

Cory will be in contact with you.
